Freedom signs four
01/03/03 Freedom Press Release
The Fort Wayne Freedom held an invitational workout on Friday December 20 and finished the day by signing four players. Lamar Conard, Robin Johnson, Ruel Taylor, and Andre Banks have all been added to the Freedom’s preseason roster.
Conard, a 5-10, 203 pound corner, started as a Sophomore as Purdue and led the team with 4 interceptions in 1997. Lamar is a quality DB and could also contribute offensively,” said Head Coach/GM Rich Huff. “He’s a physical corner who can cover and has the potential to stand out in the NIFL.”
Johnson, another defensive back, finished his career at Indiana State as a 4 year letter winner and holds the school record for blocked kicks with 5. “Robin showed 4.5 speed and should be able to run with anyone in the league. He started out as a receiver at ISU, so he gives us some options to work with,” said Huff.
Banks is a 6-3 200 pound receiver out of St. Ambrose University, where he caught 63 passes for 924 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. Says Huff, “Andre is a good all-around athlete who should provide us with multiple options at that position. His combination of size, speed and leaping ability will make him a tough assignment for any defensive back in the league.
About Taylor Huff commented, “He’s a guy who came in under the radar. Had a lot of recognition coming out of high school but never played college ball. Shows good natural instincts as a defensive back with quick feet and a great burst. He could turn into a nice utility player for us.”
