2002 NIFL MVP flies South, Dockery to play for RiverHawks
01/27/03 RiverHawks Press Release
The Tennessee RiverHawks made a major stride to contend for the 2003 NIFL title. Knoxville’s Indoor Football team has signed running back Birdie Dockery to play in the upcoming 2003 season. The 2002 National Indoor Football League MVP played with the Ohio Valley Greyhounds in 2002 leading them to the NIFL championship.
Dockery, a native of East Tennessee, played high school football at Cocke County, and graduated from Tusculum College, where he was named All American his junior year. During his 2002 NIFL MVP season, he ran for 1,645 yards on 332 attempts, averaged 100 yards per game, and 4.8 yards per carry. Dockery also had 50 touchdowns, 48 rushing and 21 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns last season. In 2002, he set the season high for rushing yards and touchdowns in a single game. Against the Tupelo FireAnts, Dockery scored six touchdowns while amassing 152 yards rushing.
“We could not pass up the opportunity to bring the NIFL MVP back to East Tennessee. He adds power, strength and speed to an offensive unit that is already one of the best in the NIFL. The people of East Tennessee will also get to see a great player that has grown up playing football in this area,” said RiverHawks general manager and offensive coordinator Garmez Parks.
