02/07/03 Roughriders Press Release
The Bismarck Roughriders of the National Indoor Football League have announced the signing of strong safety Pat Cavanaugh.
The 5' 11" 200lb Cavanaugh originally from Troy, Michigan was a three year starter for Division II Saginaw Valley State University. This past season Cavanaugh helped lead the Cardinals to a 9-3 record including a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. During the 2002 season Pat racked up 104 tackles to go along with 3 interceptions. He was also named 1st Team All-GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) as well as being named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of October 12th. Cavanaugh started 37 consecutive games for the Cardinals including the 2000 season during which Pat had 106 tackles and one interception, in 2001 Pat had 80 tackles to go along with 6 interceptions.
"I knew Pat was a player I wanted in a Roughrider jersey shortly after I began watching his tape," Head Coach Luke Shafer. "He has all the tools I look for in a safety, he has a nose for the ball, he's willing to make the big hit and most importantly he's been a winner his entire college career," added Shafer. "He also comes from a very successful program at Saginaw Valley and Head Coach Randy Awrey had only good things to say about Pat as both a player and a person and that is exactly the kind of players we want representing us and our community," said Shafer.
