Training camp opens this week

02/17/03 FireAnts Press Release

The Tupelo FireAnts will begin training camp this week at the Ballard Park Sportsplex in Tupelo.  FireAnts Head Coach John Gore has a host of candidates to fill his 25-man roster for the 2003 season, with old and new players alike.

“Competition is going to be tough,”  Coach Gore said.  “We have many talented players, and only so many spots to fill...so we are looking for some intense competition over the next few practices, as we aim to cut down the roster and get in game shape.”

The FireAnts will open the 2003 season on the road against the Beaumont Drillers in Texas on March 15th.  Beaumont is a new team in the NIFL this season, and the FireAnts will serve as their first opponent of the year.

“You cannot under estimate any team, especially Beaumont,”  Gore said.  “You have to take all teams seriously, and expect this FireAnts team to be ready for the challenge.”

Tupelo will open at home on April 12th against the Austin Rockers at the BancorpSouth Center.

Tonight will be the first evening of training camp practices, with outdoor drills taking place at Ballard Park at 6:45pm.
