Night Train tryout opens eyes

02/17/03 Night Train Press Release

This weekend’s first session of invitation-only tryout camps were everything La Crosse Night Train Head Coach Mike Brown had hoped. More than 30 Night Train hopefuls attended the three-day session at the La Crosse Boys & Girls Club.

A trio of newly-acquired players, Sean Hoolihan (QB), Larry Henderson (WR), and Dave Diemel (DT), had great workouts at their respective positions. Hoolihan split time at quarterback with last year’s starter Marrial Shields. Head Coach Mike Brown was more than happy with what he saw at that position. “Both Sean and Marrial showed magnificent ability both with their arms and leadership skills. It was exciting going into this tryout not knowing what to expect and coming out extremely pleased with the quarterback situation,” Brown said.

Henderson, who ran a 4.18 40-yard dash one month ago, shined in receiver drills after joining the Night Train after winning the AF2 championship in Peoria last season. Diemel joins the squad after winning the IFL championship with the Green Bay Bombers in 1999. “Larry was impressive as far as his overall speed and ability and Dave impressed me with his hustle and size,” Brown added.

In addition to Shields, Night Train returnees Willie Stephen (DE) and Gary Ensminger (LB) also performed well over the weekend. Both were mainstays on the Night Train defense at the end of the 2002 season. “I was pleased with our returning players conditioning. Willie and Gary are perfect examples of the hard work and effort these athletes have made this off-season,” Brown said.

The second and final tryout session will begin Friday, February 21, and conclude on Sunday, February 23, at the La Crosse Boys & Girls Club. Brown and the rest of the Night Train coaching staff will then cut the roster total to 30 when the team enters training camp on March 1.
