30-Man Lineup Features Returning Veterans, Several Surprises
March 27, 2002 - The RiverCity Renegades unveiled their 30-man active roster for the 2002 National Indoor Football League season today. Teams in the NIFL may keep up to 30 players on their active roster throughout the season but may only dress 21 players for each game. The team opens its first year in the NIFL Saturday night (7:30 p.m.) in Bismarck, North Dakota and begins the home schedule at the St. Charles Family Arena on April 13 (7:30 p.m.).
This year's squad features several returning starters from the teams 2001 season including quarterback Rick Little, running back Keith Turner, kicker Dan O'Donnell, defensive lineman Mike Armstrong and linebacker Cornelius Smith. Little served as the second string quarterback last season and threw for 259 yards and four touchdowns. Turner finished second on the Renegades, and seventh in the Indoor Professional Football League, with 182 yards rushing last season and scored 66 points. O'Donnell scored 72 points and was successful on 52% of his kicks greater than 30 yards (including kicks of 51 and 53 yards). Armstrong earned Renegades Defensive Player of the Year honors and finished fourth in the IPFL with 7.5 sacks. Smith led the Renegades, and was fifth in the IPFL, with 78 tackles in 12 games.
Through a pre-season tryout and free agent signings, the Renegades have also added several fresh faces to the roster. Defensive back Seth Hornack joins the squad after starring at the University of Pittsburgh and playing with Los Angeles in the XFL. At Pitt, he was a three-year starter and led the Panthers in tackles as a senior. Tight end Moses Regular has played with the St. Louis Rams, New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League and the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League.
"With our mix of veteran leaders and experienced newcomers, we expect an exciting 2002 football season for the fans," said Head Coach John Busby. "Although we're a bit undersized, I think we'll make up for it with quickness and tenacity. Our offense will be fun to watch, while the defense will emphasize eight men to the ball at all times."
A few former Renegades have moved on to bigger things and are not expected to return for the coming season. Quarterback Corby Jones (1490 total offense, 16 TD) is enrolled in law school at the University of Missouri. Tight End Bryan Walker was signed as free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wide receiver Jerome Hurd (49 receptions, 14 TD) is competing with Chicago in the Arena League.
The Renegades first home game will be Saturday, April 13 (7:30 p.m.) at the St. Charles Family Arena. Tickets are now on sale for the game and range in price from $5-$22. To order tickets, please call the Renegades at (314) 216-2000 or stop by the Family Arena Ticket Office. For the latest information on the Renegades, check out www.rivercityrenegades.com.
