3-0 three years in a row
04/07/03 LandSharks Press Release
The Lake Charles LandSharks have made it to the 3-0 mark for the third time in three years with an impressive 67-28 victory over the Austin Rockers in front of a home crowd of 3842. The Sharks’ running back David Winbush scampered 20 yards for the game’s first score with 10:25 left in the first quarter. Winbush finished the evening with two touchdowns.
Quarterback Ted Robison, who finished the game 8-13 for 147 yards and four touchdowns, led the Sharks offensively. Robison distributed the ball well with two touchdowns going to Jermaine Martin and one each to Earl Vercher and Jacobe Austin. According to Offensive Coordinator James Shiver Jr., the offense is focusing on distributing the ball evenly to keep defenses from keying on any one player. "In this league (NIFL), a team has to use all of its weapons to be successful," said Shiver. "Last year, defenses focused on Shadrick McAfee and we were unable to get the ball effectively to our other players. This year we have to do a better job of using all our weapons." Despite losing both McAfee and Eric Young, the Sharks offense leads the NIFL in scoring, averaging 56 points a game.
The Sharks’ defense gave a strong performance in surrendering only 26 points (two points came when Shark’s quarterback Earl Vercher was sacked in the end zone with 7 seconds left.) The Sharks gave up two field goals in the first half and allowed 0 points in the third quarter. Anthony Porter and Kendall Shello each had three tackles for a loss to lead the Sharks defensively. Porter finished the game with 13.5 tackles. Shello recorded three sacks, all of which came in the first half, and had a blocked field goal. The Sharks also had two defensive touchdowns. The first defensive touchdown came on a Butch Monticello 50 yard interception return with 2:54 left in the first half. The second defensive touchdown came with 3:54 left in the game when Warren St. Junious picked up a fumble and danced 15 yards for the touchdown. Defensive leader Darnell Lee was held out of the second half as a precautionary measure due to a hamstring injury he sustained in the first half.
