04/15/03 LandSharks Press Release
Last week, there were five teams in the NIFL that were undefeated: Lake Charles, Beaumont, Ohio Valley, Fort Wayne, and Utah. At least one had to fall as Ohio Valley played Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne can now be removed from the list of unbeaten. Another name can be removed this weekend as the Lake Charles LandSharks, 4-0 (3-0), travel to Beaumont to take on the Drillers, 4-0 (3-0), in a key Atlantic South Showdown.
It’s too early to call this game a must win, but this game has to be considered the NIFL Game of the Week. Both teams have identical records. Both teams have beaten Tupelo and Austin. Both teams have beaten a team from the Atlantic East. Both teams believe they will be the Atlantic South Division Champions at the end of the season.
This will be a close game; it takes an hour to get from Lake Charles to Beaumont. Many of the fans of the two clubs will know each other; some will be family. The players are also very familiar with each other. Coach Bryan Blake was a two-year starter at linebacker for the LandSharks before going to Beaumont. The LandSharks are also very familiar with QB Derrick Taite whom they have seen for the past two seasons with the Mississippi Fire Dogs and the Houma Bayou Bucks. Taite was acquired by the LandSharks and then traded to Beaumont for C Derrick Lewis and WR Jacobe Austin. Last year, Lewis and Austin were with the Louisiana Rangers, AKA Beaumont Drillers, and were teammates of Beaumont WR Clarence Fields.
