'Caps end Bandit winning streak
05/04/02 Capitols Press Release
The Lincoln Capitols recovered from back-to-back road losses Saturday night, claiming a 43-28 win over previously unbeaten Sioux City at the Pershing Center.
Damon Benning followed up a three-touchdown performance at Bismarck with another trio of touchdowns, including the first of the night for the Capitols, who improved to 4-2 with the win. Benning scored on runs of 2 and 7 yards sandwiched around a 3-yard reception from quarterback Josh Luedtke.
The Capitols opened a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, thanks in part to defensive back Heath Staples first interception of the season snuffing a Bandit drive. Sioux City answered with 10 points in the second period, before the Caps took a field goal advantage into the locker room on Chace Long's 22-yard field goal with a 1:06 to play in the 2nd quarter.
Sioux City opened the second half with the football and took it's first lead of the night on Jesse Wavrunek's 2 yard run, and the teams would trade scores until the Capitols took the lead for good with 11:52 to play on Benning's reception to make it a 29-28 game.
The Capitols scored twice more as Rayshawn Askew scored his second touchdown of the night with 5:43 remaining on an 8-yard run, and Benning finished the scoring with 1:11 to play.
Quarterback Josh Luedkte completed 18-of-25 passes for 119 yards and the Capitols did not turn the ball over against a defense that had registered a +15 turnover ratio through the first five games.
Sioux City quarterback Jarrod DeGeorgia threw for 176 yards on 21-of-33 and one touchdown. The Bandits were limited to 222 yards of offense after racking up over 300 in a win over Tri-City last Sunday night.
The Capitols, now 4-2 on the year, take to the road for a 3-game swing starting at Sioux Falls next Saturday night.
