RiverCity seek first NIFL victory Saturday against Tupelo

05/09/02 Renegades Press Release
The RiverCity Renegades face the Tupelo FireAnts Saturday night (7:35 p.m.) at the St. Charles Family Arena in an Atlantic Conference match up.  The Renegades (0-6) are in search of the franchise’s first victory in the National Indoor Football League after entering the League prior to the start of the 2002 season.

RiverCity has lowered its points allowed and increased its number of points scored over the last two games after Head Coach Bill Charles joined the squad.  Defensively, the Renegades have averaged just 163 yards allowed over the last two games after allowing more than 220 yards per game over the first four contests.  The team dramatically lowered its points allowed per contest during the period as well, lowering the average from 52.3 to 48.5.  Offensively, the Renegades scored 33 points in the last two games, while recording 34 total points in the previous three contests.  In addition, the rushing attack has netted 80 yards in the last two weeks after posting 108 total yards in the first four contests of the season.

Injuries have forced the Renegades to juggle the roster throughout the season.  Among the pre-season starters missing at least two games already this season are Offensive Lineman Chris Kelley, Kicker Dan O’Donnell, Defensive Lineman Mike Armstrong, Linebacker Cornelius Smith and Running Back Keith Turner.  These key losses have hurt the team in two ways, both in on-the-field output and a loss of veteran leadership.

Despite the injuries, the Renegades have found a number of bright spots through newcomers and key returnees.  Defensive Back Seth Hornack, a former star at the University of Pittsburgh, leads the team with two interceptions and is among the League leaders with 44 tackles in five games.  Wide receiver/tight end Moses Regular has developed a two-pronged attack with more than 130 yards receiving and 17 yards gained rushing.  Last weekend also marked the debut of Wide Receiver Jerome Hurd, who led the Renegades in receiving and scoring during the 2001 season.  Against the Ohio Valley Greyhounds last Saturday, Hurd caught eight passes for 76 yards and brought in two touchdowns.  Leading the Renegades offense is Quarterback Rick Little, who boasts a 96.25 quarterback rating and seven touchdown passes.

The FireAnts (1-4) enter the game having lost their last three contests after defeating the Oklahoma Crude on April 6.  Saturday’s game begins a four-game road trip for Tupelo, who also visit Tennessee, Oklahoma and Ohio Valley on the journey.  The FireAnts are led by the rushing duo of Chris Rainey (46 yards per game) and Shalondo Jones (42 yards per game).  Like the Renegades, defense has been the downfall for the FireAnts – allowing 43 points per game and 212 total yards allowed per game.
