'Ants Ready for Renegades
05/10/02 FireAnts Press Release
The Tupelo FireAnts (1-4) hit the road this weekend as they face the River City Renegades (0-6) in St. Charles, MO, Saturday night starting at 7:30pm.
River City, an expansion team in the National Indoor Football League, played last season in the now defunct Indoor Professional Football League along with the Tennessee Thunder Cats and Omaha Beef.
Last week, after making key adjustments, the Renegades posted another loss, this time to the Ohio Valley Greyhounds, 43-20. While Ohio Valley is the top team in the Atlantic North Conference, River City's changes and additions are not to be overlooked. With the return of Renegades WR Jerome Hurd, the 'Ants will need to work the defense end of the game, with the offensive workings now in place.
The FireAnts hope to regain ground in the win column this week. After dropping to the Austin Knights this past weekend, 67-55, the FireAnts are looking forward to performances from several key players.
"We expect to see improved play from WR Kevin Cooper," Head Coach John Gore said. "Also, we have moved Kenzaki Jones to free safety, a more natural position for him, which should boost our defensive secondary."
"Going into this game, we have two very capable quarterbacks in Todd Jordan and Damon Smith, right now, we plan on Todd starting the game, but both quarterbacks should see playing time," Gore added.
New to the FireAnts lineup this week is Kicker Jim Terry. Terry, a native of Clearwater Beach, FL, replaces Jeff Walker on the active roster.
The 'Ants take on the Renegades this Saturday at the Family Arena in St. Charles, MO. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm. Listen to all of the away game action on your home for FireAnts Football, WBIP 99.3FM or online at www.fireantsfootball.com.
