Running Back Shon Mitchell Joins RiverCity Offensive Backfield

05/22/02 Renegades Press Release
The RiverCity Renegades offensive backfield will have a new look for Saturday night’s game against the Tennessee ThunderCats at the Family Arena. Renegades Head Coach Bill Charles added former University of Texas Running Back Shon Mitchell to the attack. Mitchell attended the university from 1995-96 and played professionally with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League, the London Monarchs of the NFL Europe and the Tulsa Talons of the Arena League.

“Shon will be a marquee, impact player for our team,” said Charles. “He was one of the best players on the former Big XII Champion Longhorns and will give us a boost offensively. I look forward to his immediate contribution this weekend against Tennessee.”

Recognized as the fastest member of the Texas backfield that featured 1998 Heisman Trophy winning running back Ricky Williams and quarterback James Brown, Mitchell ran for 1,724 yards and 14 touchdowns in his Longhorn career. The three combined to lead the Longhorns to the 1996 Big XII Championship at the TransWorld Dome over the #3 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. He earned the 1995 Southwestern Conference Newcomer of the Year award after becoming just the sixth Longhorn to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season (1,099 yards on 176 carries – 6.2 yards per carry).

Before attending Texas, Mitchell earned Second Team Junior College All-America honors at Blinn College and ranked among Texas’ top high school prospects at Austin LBJ High School. At Blinn, he rushed for 1,656 yards on 299 carries over the two seasons. In 1994, he ranked ninth nationally with 1,110 yards rushing on 169 carries – a 111-yards per game average – and scored 16 touchdowns. At LBJ, he broke the Austin Independent School District rushing record with 2,076 yards gained as a senior and scored 23 touchdowns. In addition to football, he joined the 400-meter relay squad that won the Texas State High School Championship.

The Renegades meet the ThunderCats in an Atlantic North Division match-up Saturday night. Tennessee defeated RiverCity 39-13 earlier this season and has won six straight games against the team. For Renegades tickets, stop by the Family Arena Ticket Office or call the Renegades at 636-410-0333.
