'Ants Win On The Road, 41-33
05/23/02 FireAnts Press Release
The Tupelo FireAnts won over the Oklahoma Crude, 41-33, on the road Thursday night in Enid, OK.
Tupelo started off the scoring early, with 'Ants QB Damon Smith connecting with WR Kevin Cooper for a 3-yard TD reception. New FireAnts Kicker Chris Freeman would convert on the extra point, for the 7-0 lead. The FireAnts started to show a bit more fire as the 1st quarter continued. WR Jody Jennings was on the receiving end of a 36-yard bomb by Smith for the 14-0 'Ants lead as the extra point sailed through the uprights.
In the second quarter, Oklahoma would put some points on the board with the completion of a 4-yard run into the end zone. With the extra point denied, Oklahoma would edge Tupelo's lead, 14-6. Then, the 'Ants would answer, scoring at the 6:38 mark on a 1-yard run by RB Chris Rainey. Tupelo would end the half with the lead, 21-6.
After halftime, the Crude came out on a mission in the third quarter of play. Oklahoma would score on their first possession. After making the 2-point conversion, the Crude would come within one touchdown to tie the game, with Tupelo leading 21-14. But, the 'Ants would answer, with Smith connecting with WR Jody Jennings for a second time on the night to increase the tally, 28-14. The Crude would not stop fighting the fight, punching the ball into the end zone with 4:12 to go in the 3rd quarter. With the extra point good, Oklahoma would add some more points to the board, with the score 28-21 in favor of the 'Ants. With Tupelo losing the ball on an interception, the 'Ants would regain control when DB Curtis Beals would gain a pick of his own. Beals would then pitch the ball to Kenzaki Jones as he walked it into the end zone for the 35-21 lead after another successful FireAnts extra point attempt late in the third quarter.
With touchdowns and interceptions on both ends of the field, the 'Ants needed another strong showing in the fourth quarter in order to gain the win. Oklahoma, on the other hand, would end up scoring first late in the quarter, but with the extra point no good, Tupelo would still have an 8-point advantage, 35-27. With time ticking down, the FireAnts would go on to punch in one more TD on a 1-yard Chris Rainey run. But as the clock ticked down, Oklahoma would come through with the long TD pass into the end zone. But that final TD would be too little too late for the Crude. Tupelo would go on to win the game, 41-33, on the road.
The Tupelo FireAnts now improve to 3-5 on the season while Oklahoma falls to 1-8. The 'Ants will take on the top team in the Atlantic North Division, the Ohio Valley Greyhounds in Wheeling, WV, Saturday-June 1st. Tupelo will return to home turf Saturday, June 8th as the visiting Louisiana Rangers come to town.
