Capitols defeat division leader, Sioux City

05/27/02 Lincoln Capitols Press Release
The Lincoln Capitols gained control of the scoreboard one play into Saturday night's game at Sioux City and never trailed the Bandits in claiming a 37-23 victory over the NIFL's Pacific Conference North Division leaders.

Quarterback Josh Luedtke found Tyrone Tyler on a 19-yard touchdown pass on the Capitols first play from scrimmage, and the Capitols defense made a lead stand up all night, never allowing Sioux City any closer than seven points, and overcoming a lopsided penalty total.

Lincoln's defense recovered from a shootout in Wyoming a week ago by forcing five Sioux City turnovers, all interceptions from quarterback Jarrod DeGeorgia, who had thrown five all season coming into the game. Derrick Smith, Jr., picked off a pair of passes, Travis Kopf garnered his second pick of the season, Heath Staples his third in four weeks and Darrell Jack rounded out the scoring for Lincoln by returning an interception 34 yards for a score with 1:20 to play.

DeGeorgia was limited to 13-of-38 for 170 yards an a pair of touchdowns.

Luedkte finished 15-of-30 for 145 yards and a pair of touchdowns with two interceptions. Luedtke found Damon Benning eight times for 63 yards and a score. Zach Sangster made three catches for 54 yards and Tyler finished with three grabs for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Kicker Chace Long helped keep the Bandits at bay by hitting field goals of 45, 34 and 46 yards as Lincoln improves to 6-3 and returns home Friday night to face the LaCrosse Night Train.

Sioux City falls to 6-2, with both losses at the hands of Lincoln, and travels to Omaha this week.
