Weekly LandSharks update

06/04/03 LandSharks Press Release

THIS WEEK’S GAME: at Austin Rockers
TOP STORY – DEFENSE KEYS WIN; LANDSHARKS MAINTAIN 1ST PLACE IN ATLANTIC SOUTH

The Lake Charles LandSharks have made it three in a row after defeating the Beaumont Drillers 60-16 at the Reef. The LandSharks improve to 8-2 (6-2), while the Drillers fall to 5-5 (4-4). The Sharks have dimmed the Drillers’ playoff hopes and intend to do the same to the Austin Rockers.

The LandSharks relied on their ground game, as RB David Winbush had 15 carries for 56 yards and 2 touchdowns. WR Jacobe Austin, in his return, added a touchdown on the ground and caught another. Sharks’ QB Freddie Harrison was 10-22 for 111 yards, 1 interception and 2 touchdowns. Harrison added 27 yards on 4 carries.

The LandSharks’ Defense held court again allowing only 16 points and scoring 2 touchdowns. DL Kevin Thomas scooted 6 yards after recovering a fumble for a touchdown and CB Corey Stewart returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Anthony Porter led the team in tackles with 6 and Darnell Lee added 5.5 tackles. LandSharks DL Kendal Shello had 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and a blocked FG.

The LandSharks travel to face the Austin Rockers this Saturday. The LandSharks beat the Rockers 67-28 in Week 4. The Rockers have improved since Week 4, going 6-2 over their last 8 games. The Sharks know this game is a must-win for the Rockers if they have any hope of a playoff run. The Rockers improved to 6-4 (5-2) with a 26-21 win over the Oklahoma Crude last Saturday.

The Sharks return to the Reef Saturday, June 14th to host the Show Me Believers from St. Charles, Missouri. Keep up-to-date with the latest news from the Lake Charles LandSharks by visiting our website at www.landsharksfootball.com or visit the NIFL website at nationalindoorfootballleague.net.

The Sharks are still on top of the Atlantic South with an 8-2 overall record and a 6-2 division record. The Houma Bayou Bucks, 8-3 (6-2), are a half-game behind the Sharks. The Austin Rockers, 6-4 (5-2), have taken over the third spot with a 26-21 win over Oklahoma, while the Drillers dropped to fourth.
