Skoog scoots for 6 TDs in Red Dog win

06/09/02 Rapid City Journal
ENID, Okla. - Tom Skoog's name, no doubt, is difficult to pronounce or spell.

He's just as difficult to tackle.

The Rapid City running back dashed for 131 yards and scored six touchdowns to lead the Red Dogs past the Oklahoma Crude 61-38 before 1,896 fans at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center Coliseum Saturday night.

Skoog scored on runs of five, 17, 21, 16 and four yards, and caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Jason Murdock as the Red Dogs evened their record at 6-6.

Rapid City scored on its first eight possessions to dominate the game from the beginning. They led 42-12 at halftime and 48-12 after three periods before the Crude rallied to score four touchdowns in the final period.

Oklahoma, 1-9, dropped its eighth straight game.

Anthony Davis rushed for 75 yards for the Crude and scored three touchdowns - two from a yard out and one from two yards out.

Oklahoma quarterback John Carnevali had touchdown passes of eight yards to Wes Bell and 25 yards to Anthony Perez. Backup quarterback Johnny Merrell scored the last touchdown on a four-yard run.

Murdock, who threw six touchdowns in a 56-27 romp over the Crude on April 12 in Rapid City, completed 11 of 22 passes for 111 yards. He threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Brian Mills to open the scoring with 11:51 remaining in the first period.

Antonio Conley scored Rapid City's other touchdown on a three-yard run.

Aaron Tucker kicked field goals of 35 and 21 yards for the Red Dogs. He also got a rouge for Rapid City when Davis bobbled a kickoff after a 35-yard field goal and was unable to get it out of the end zone.

New Crude kicker Kevin Phillips missed two field goals and three extra points. He did hit two extra points. He missed another opportunity on a bad snap.

The Red Dog defense was effective keeping the Crude out of the end zone as drives stalled at the Rapid City 15, 6 and 13.

The Crude will host Lake Charles, La., in their final home game of the season next Saturday.
