Storm signs All Star Poppinga
12/22/02 Storm Press Release
The Sioux Falls Storm of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) is pleased to announce that they have re-signed All-Star defensive back Shannon Poppinga.
Poppinga (6’0, 180, Augustana (S.D.)) returns for a third season with the Storm and his fourth overall, after starting his career with the Sioux Falls Cobras of the former Indoor Football League (IFL). The former collegiate All-American tallied six interceptions, 18 pass breakups and 64 tackles a year ago, while having four interceptions, 20 pass breakups and 88 tackles in 2001. “Shannon is one of the best cornerbacks I have ever scene,” said head coach Mike Aldrich. “He has unbelievable feet and quickness and is just a great technician,” Aldrich said. “He may be one of the best players in the league and it is a lot of fun to watch him play.”
The signing of Poppinga, along with Don Hilsenroth (linebacker), Bobby Perkins (defensive back) and Corey Walker (wide receiver) completes the Storm’s re-signing of their 2002 All-Stars. Jason Schwab is the only 2002 Storm All-Star who has not re-signed, as he has retired and joined the team’s coaching staff. “These four guys were a priority in getting signed, but we also have a handful of other veterans that we want to get signed as soon as we can,” said Aldrich.
