Out of the gate
06/11/03 Don Yeager Jr.
Welcome loyal readers to yet another addition of “Out of the Gate,” my weekly column devoted to the Ohio Valley Greyhounds!
First of all, another great win this weekend. I do admit that I didn’t expect it to be as close as it was, but a win is a win is a win. I guarantee it won’t be that close in a few weeks. Yet another good game by Lloyd and Shane, and Steve turned in a good performance. The week in South Carolina should do the team some good, and if anyone deserves to spend a week in Myrtle Beach, it’s these guys. I have to say I think that MB is showing a lot of class allowing us to use their center for practice. I didn’t exactly like the group when they were in Winston Salem with the Energy last season, but I have found that they would seem to be great people that just want to bring the fans the game and try to put a winning product on the field. Winston Salem just didn’t turn out to be a place where a team could thrive, surprisingly. Myrtle is the exact opposite. I know from vacationing in North Carolina, one of the biggest draws is the minor league baseball, and if there would have been an NIFL or AF2 team there I am sure the tourists would have been out in droves. With Myrtle Beach getting three times the vacationers as where I go, I am sure the crowds are good. I do not know if they are Lexington good, but they are probably good.
Next on the slate are Jerry’s Kids, the Tupelo Fire Ants. The ‘Ants haven’t seemed to show much life many times this season, but when you are playing in this league, especially on the road, anything can happen. I do believe the defense will disrupt anything that the Fire Ants offense tries to put together, and the ‘O should score early and often. Looking at the stats on the league page today, Eddie has the top 2 single game performances in sacks this season…I’m game…he’ll turn in another 4 sacker Friday night. Ditto for Lloyd “Big Dawg” Clemons, who will turn in the single game rushing mark, and improve on the single game attempts mark. The ‘Hounds will be all over Tupelo like me on a steak…mmm…steak…er; anyway, they will be all over them. I will call it OV 65 Tupelo 22 in a tune up for the Lexington game.
Lexington rolls into town next as the ‘Hounds will host six straight games. That’s right…six straight. Lexington, on Ironmen throwback jersey night, Tupelo, Myrtle Beach, Fort Wayne, Lexington, and Omaha. Those last three are the 1st round playoff game, the Atlantic Division title game, and Indoor Bowl 3, all Greyhounds wins. Those would be my predictions this week. If you want to know my game predictions, drop me an e-mail. Keep an eye out on the message board, as this week I plan on launching a yahoo-photos site with Greyhounds pictures.
