IFL joins the worlds largest professional football league!

11/4/04 Roughnecks Press Release

Odessa, TX-- Along with the other members of the Intense Football League (IFL), the Odessa Roughnecks announced at the Elegante Hotel today that the team has accepted an offer to merge with the 32 team National Indoor Football League (NIFL) effective immediately. The NIFL is a coast-to coast professional football league competing in an indoor format very similar to that of the IFL. The five year old league was formed after playing several seasons as the Indoor Professional Football League and brings nearly ten-years of structure to the Odessa Roughnecks and other former IFL teams.

"Our new league is operating in a format that would have taken years for the IFL to reach. As successful as we have been, the entire league is honored to be joined with a national and very credible entity like the NIFL.", stated Roughnecks President Tommy Benizio. The elated Roughnecks, along with other former IFL teams the Corpus Christi Hammerheads, San Angelo Stampede, Lubbock Lonestars, and potential franchises in El Paso and Fort Worth will be in the new central-southern division to be named over the coming weeks. Along with this information will be complete conference and divisional alignment along with the complete 2005 schedule which will run from late March through early July.

"To add the Roughnecks and other Texas teams to the NIFL continues the history of growth and vitality that are the hallmarks of the NIFL", remarked league president Carolyn Shiver. The NIFL is noted for promoting players to the next level of professional football with dozens of former players now playing in the AFL. CFL, and even the NFL. Roughnecks Head Coach Chris Williams commented, "Now, in addition to the talent and success exhibited by our team last year, we will have access to a pool of players that is truly nationwide. I can't wait for our team and especially our fans to show them what Texas style football is all about!"

In addition to the many and varied advantages of the Roughnecks joining the NIFL, during the negotiations the team requested and received the rights to host what will be the first-ever NIFL All-Star game. The event, which will include players from all 32 NIFL teams kicking of against the Roughnecks, will be the finale of a memorable two-day weekend scheduled for Friday and Saturday, August 5th and 6th, 2005.

Season tickets remain at the same low prices and continue to move fast. Further information about any of these topics can be found by logging on to www.OdessaIFL.com (to be renamed soon) or by calling (432) 332-PASS (7277).
