Horsemen kick off season March 21
HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORT
The Lexington Horsemen will open their second season of indoor football next March with a new coach, a new division and new hope of winning their first championship.
The Horsemen, who in October named Bob Sphire to replace Tony Franklin as head coach, announced yesterday that they'll open the 2004 National Indoor Football League season March 21 at St. Louis against the Show Me Believers.
Six expansion franchises join the league for 2004, and four teams have folded, meaning 26 NIFL teams will take the field, up two from last season.
The realignment places Lexington, which finished 9-6 last season, in a new division.
The Horsemen will play in the newly created Atlantic North, along with the Evansville BlueCats, the Fort Wayne Freedom and the Show Me Believers.
Tryout Saturday
The Horsemen will hold an open tryout in Heritage Hall, next to Rupp Arena, on Saturday.
All offensive and defensive hopefuls are invited to attend. A separate tryout for kickers will be held on a to-be-announced date in January.
Interested players must be at least 19 years old and should contact the Horsemen at (859) 422-7277 for more information.
