Beast can’t put out Fire again

When the running game wasn’t working and the passing game wasn’t working and special teams could use some help, the only thing that kept the Bayou Beast in Saturday’s game against Mississippi was the defense.

Until that broke down in the second half.

Plagued once again by a series of second-half mistakes, the Beast fell 41-6 to the Firedogs at the Civic Center, dropping to 0-5 on the season.

“If we could go out (in the second half) and score and put some points on the board, then we could win the game,” Beast cornerback Dewey Simpson said. “If we scored, they were going to shut down. I guess things just happened differently.” Full story>>

This is becoming a habit with the Bayou Beast: another week, another new batch of players.

As head coach Don Shows recruits the Beast’s newest cornerback or defensive back or running back, the players are wearing “Hello, my name is” stickers to practice each week.

So, expected to join the 23-man roster for today’s 7 p.m. game against the visiting Mississippi Fire Dogs are receiver ‘slash’ quarterback ‘slash’ defensive back Jay Reed, defensive end Scooter Davis, kicker Brian Lewis and former Louisiana Tech cornerback Dewey Simpson. Full story>>

Number of weeks into the National Indoor Football League season: six.
Number of new Bayou Beast players: four.

Guest starring (in alphabetical order): wide receiver Leroy Fields, fullback Carlos Knight, quarterback Akili Roberson and a cameo by a kicker to be named later.

With starting quarterback Trey Fisher out for at least two weeks with a bruised rib, the Beast have brought in Roberson to fill the opening for today’s game against the Tupelo Fire Ants.

Roberson, who signed a contract with the XFL but was not selected by a team, was in Los Angeles before getting the call from his agent to head to Monroe. Full story>>
