Cavalry Rounds Up Shockwave Offense

05/12/01 YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
CASPER, Wyo. -- So much for the sequel.
A week after playing its best game of the season in the debut of coach Ron Lyell, the Yakima Shockwave would probably rather forget the follow-up.

With arenafootball2 outcast quarterback Richard Fuentes tossing five first-half touchdowns in his return to the Cavalry, Wyoming rolled past the Shockwave 48-8 on Friday night at the Casper Events Center.

The loss is the first on the road for Yakima (3-4).

Yakima's eight points tied for the second-lowest output of the season by a National Indoor Football team. With two minutes left in the game, it appeared the Shockwave would top the dubious mark held by Louisiana in a 55-6 loss to Mississippi on April 7. Full story>>

Upbeat Shockwave Hits the Road

05/11/01 YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
Buoyed by its best performance of the season in the most tumultuous of weeks, the Yakima Shockwave hits the road tonight for the first of two consecutive games away from the SunDome.

The Shockwave (3-3) faces 3-2 Wyoming Cavalry a week after thumping the Southern Oregon Heat and former Yakima head coach Larry Jobe, 65-22, in a contest that gained as much attention for off-the-field issues as the game did itself.

But with Jobe's return and the hubbub that followed behind, Yakima can again concentrate on football solely. Full story>>

Shockwave Jolts Heat, Ex-Coach

05/05/01 JERREL SWENNING YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
Ex-Yakima coach Larry Jobe shouldn't take it personally.

After all, it was Jobe who put much of the Yakima Shockwave roster together before he was removed as head coach Tuesday.

But apparently it just took new coach Ron Lyell's "positive" approach to meld the talent together and deliver Yakima its first home victory. Full story>>

Coach VanderWegan Can't Stop Playing

05/04/01 JERREL SWENNING YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
Eric VanderWegen hears the fatherly advice.
He just won't follow it. Not quite yet.

VanderWegen, who was a second-team all-Central Washington Athletic Conference quarterback at Wapato High School his senior season in 1992, returns to Yakima Valley as QB and co-head coach of Southern Oregon Heat of the National Indoor Football League.

His dad Pete VanderWegen wishes he would drop that quarterbacking part.

"I'm kind of hoping he will hang up the cleats," said the Wapato School District superintendent. "But he's got that die-hard attitude."

That moxie probably figured into VanderWegen returning on the short end of a five- to eight-week rehabilitation schedule from a torn right pectoral muscle suffered in the Heat's 27-21 debut loss to the Shockwave on March 28.

He also has unfinished business against Yakima. Full story>>

Ex-Shockwave Coach Hired by Heat

05/04/01 JERREL SWENNING YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
Ex-Yakima Shockwave coach Larry Jobe wasn't gone from town long.

In a subplot almost fit for the likes of "Nature Boy" Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan, Jobe was hired Wednesday as co-head coach and general manager of the Southern Oregon Heat -- a day after he was removed as Shockwave coach.

Jobe and the Heat visit the Shockwave at 7:05 tonight in the SunDome.

He's looking forward to the fresh start with Southern Oregon, which is 1-3 overall and 0-2 and in last place the Western Division. The Shockwave is a spot ahead of the Heat at 1-2 in the division and 2-3 overall. Full story>>

Shockwave to Name Lyell New Coach

05/03/01 JERREL SWENNING YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
Mitch Donahue, DSA Sports director of football operations, tapped a familiar source to fill the head coaching vacancy with the Yakima Shockwave.

Ron Lyell, a former junior college assistant coach and agent who helped fill Donahue's Billings Thunderbolt roster last season, is expected to be named Shockwave coach at a 2 p.m. press conference today.

"I think he is a perfect fit," said Donahue, who oversees the Billings Outlaws and Shockwave. "One thing he can do is recruit." Full story>>
